About the seminar

“Polish-Norwegian Seminar and Workshop on Open Platforms for Mobile Devices” is opening a series of events related to FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) in mobile computing, which will be held at BRAMA Laboratory in cooperation with its Norwegian partners, in particular SINTEF, which is to be known as Mobile Open Platforms Seminars – MOPS.

MOPS is about sharing know-how and experience, and promoting Polish-Norwegian scientific cooperation through joint organisation of conferences, seminars, workshops, development sessions and other type of knowledge and experience sharing events and meetings both in brick-and-mortar venues and on-line, all in the area of mobile technologies and open source. MOPS welcomes all software developers, scientists, students, mobile business people, FLOSS enthusiasts, sociologist and anthropologists, artists, media and all the creative individuals out there fascinated by the phenomena of mobility and freedom brought by modern technologies that make societies even more vibrant, culturally reach and prosperous.

The first MOPS event will take place in Warsaw at Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of Warsaw University of Technology and will start on the 25 September with a seminar featuring a series of lectures related to open platforms for mobile terminals such as OpenMoko, Android, MUSIC and other. Moreover the seminar will include lectures by Norwegian scientists representing a European mobile software scientific project MUSIC as well as experienced industry practitioners including Android engineers from Google. It will continue overnight with a development workshop during which an exemplary application for a mobile device will be hacked. “Currently the state of FLOSS on mobile platforms is somewhat lacking, and we aim to help changing that” says Michał Woźniak, BRAMA researcher, one of the originators of MOPS. The objectives of the event are twofold: to discuss opportunities that Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS) opens for mobile computing as well as the challenges it has to face (to be address by the seminar), and to provide a convincing proof of those opportunities by creating a simple yet cross-platform open-source application during a single, one-night hacking session (the workshop). The seminar is open to anyone both on the venue and online, the workshop can be joined by anyone remotely via Internet. All that is needed is just a quick and easy on-line registration.

Polish Norwegian Seminar and Workshop on Open Platforms for Mobile Devices is supported by a grant from Norway through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. It is also an official Software Freedom Day 2008 registered event.
